You’ve probably heard of DVTEL’s Applications and Integration Center. And you might even know its motto: “If you can dream it, we can build it.” But what exactly is the AIC – and how can its team help you as a customer?

The AIC’s main mission is to integrate third-party products with DVTEL’s Latitude Network Video Management System to provide users with a single, streamlined operating platform for managing their security systems. The AIC takes each customer’s unique requirements, and then analyzes, designs and implements a comprehensive solution. Really, the AIC is like DVTEL’s tailor: ready to fit the technology precisely to the customer’s needs.

The DVTEL team has extensive experience in integrating their technology with access control systems, video analytics, GIS systems, license plate recognition programs and perimeter systems. They use a range of communication protocols to connect to other systems, including TCP/IP, XML, Restful API and text files.

Here’s a great example of a recent AIC integration: DVTEL’s Latitude NVMS was integrated with ShotSpotter gunfire alert and location technology, which creates seamless archiving and monitoring tools for events created by the gunfire alert and location technology. On top of that, DVTEL has also enhanced its integration with Google Earth virtual globe, map and geographical information program to optimize the ShotSpotter integration.

The ShotSpotter system involves covering wide areas with collaborative sensors that triangulate the precise location of a gunshot within a designated coverage area. The DVTEL-ShotSpotter integration module sends event notifications to Latitude to provide operators with an overview of any gunfire incidents. Responses can be programmed for each type of incoming gunshot detection event, and users can view and react to incoming gunshot events. A gunshot’s location can be marked on a Google Earth map, and PTZ cameras in the vicinity can be automatically directed to the incident location and displayed to the operator in Latitude’s ControlCenter.

Find out more about the AIC and what it can do for you at www.dvtel.com/applications-integration-center.

As any home or business owner knows, it’s better to prevent a break-in than to actually experience one. Hence the need for a security system that works proactively to prevent crime — rather than simply providing video evidence after the fact.

The alarm industry today is plagued by false alarms, which account for up to 97% of all alarm incidents. This wastes local police resources and costs taxpayers more than $2 billion nationwide every year.

The False Alarm Reduction Association has identified video verification as an effective way to minimize false alarms and ensure that police are only deployed when there is a verified crime. For an alarm user, the most important aspect of a detection system is a balance between the false alarm rate and the probability of detection. By investing in video analytics, the user will decrease the former while increasing the latter.

Video analytics is uniquely suited for commercial-grade protection because it provides both the alarm trigger and the video verification. The main advantage of this technology is the ability of the central station to determine instantly if an alarm is valid or false just by a quick glance at the screen. This fact also helps the central station save money on personnel as fewer people can now monitor larger numbers of cameras

Video analytics provide an ideal solution for proactive security. Going beyond the typical forensic video capabilities, analytics can help users actually catch criminals during a security event. The ioimage by DVTEL technology has been at the forefront of intrusion detection since 2004, and was initially used by military and government facilities. The military-grade technology provides the best ratio of false alarm rates to probability of detection, as well as the most reliable and cost-effective solution for intrusion detection, when compared to legacy perimeter and fence sensors and other video content analysis solutions.

ioimage by DVTEL technology provides edge-based analytics, which do not rely on servers or third-party software. This reduces network bandwidth requirements while maintaining performance at the highest level. In addition, since DVTEL provides a complete solution between edge analytics and the video management system, users benefit from a single, tightly integrated solution, which means there is less opportunity for failure. Equally important, it provides a single “throat to choke” for the integrator and end user who often times struggle when integrations between two technologies go south.

In a world of growing threats to businesses of all kinds, this type of proactive security technology is exactly what users need for peace of mind — as well as effective security.

IP cameras and mobile applications are rapidly changing the dynamics of the security industry. Experts contend that new generations of smartphones will become their own central monitoring stations, or command and control centers. Not only are wireless technologies providing users with more mobility than ever but these devices extend the reach of a surveillance infrastructure and protected premises, speeding up response and providing real time situational awareness to allow appropriate actions to be taken. Removing the former constraints of video surveillance (storage concerns and lack of power, for example) enables users to deploy cameras in more locations than ever — and have full control of these devices and their operating parameters.

At the core of all these newfound applications are smartphones — streaming live video to users on the go and perfect for on-the-spot surveillance and recording. It is real-life, real-time, on-the-scene camera operation. With this power, users can also become more proactive and respond appropriately to any situation, as they now have a real-time and accurate look into any incidents as, before or after they happen. With pre-alarm capabilities as well, cameras become full-fledged notification devices.

There’s more: IP camera and mobile smartphone applications help users handle their business more effectively and reliably. The value-add is there, providing manufacturing efficiencies and management of crowds in a stadium, for example, yielding a greater return on investment.

The IP video surveillance industry has worked at developing software to make all this possible, taking mobile surveillance applications to levels never before achieved in the field. New products feature embedded video management software, and allow channel partners and users to deploy cameras without ongoing concerns about recording or storing on site. Of course, these traditional set-ups are highly valuable but they are augmented by the development of new technologies that expand what was once never thought possible. Today’s technology turns end users, first responders and a host of IT, security, facilities management and C-level executives into live camera operators.

For many VARs and integrators, today’s security industry is vastly different than it was only a few years ago. Several trends have led the charge, but chief among them are the rapid migration of legacy analog surveillance systems to IP networks, and the merging of responsibilities between an end user’s IT and security organizations. Many VARs have responded by growing their IT support staff to adapt to these significant changes in the market.

It is vital that both VARs and integrators work with manufacturers that understand this new “converged” approach to security, and should seek out manufacturer partners who provide solutions that leverage the IP backbone while also remaining user-friendly to both IT and physical security. At the same time, integrators need to know how to speak to both these groups; their manufacturer partners can provide them with the education needed to effectively address both groups and mitigate concerns.

Today’s technology providers are readily aware of the extensive effort required from their resellers, and are making strides in their attempts to minimize this struggle. Many are developing comprehensive partner programs, attempting to reduce the complexity of installations, offering scalable solutions and producing open systems to help their resellers increase revenues.

Today’s product vendors with the greatest foresight already have well-established partnership programs, and even those without them are not far behind. Luckily, manufacturers, such as DVTEL, are lending more support than ever to their reseller partners through these initiatives, and the benefits of participation can launch small businesses on a strong growth path.

As any integrator knows, it doesn’t take much for a project to go wrong. DVTEL works to prevent installation problems, and find ways to solve them when they occur. One such solution is to provide all encompassing, practically out-of-the-box solutions that ease integration issues. These types of end-to-end solutions provide integrators with a much-needed edge.

Right now, in today’s market, here is a growing push to simplify installations and this effort will help IP systems reach mass adoption. When a manufacturer simplifies a technology by making easier to integrate with other systems, the integrator can install it faster and move on to the next project much more quickly.

But manufacturers (like us!) also understand that an end-to-end solution is not always the best answer. Customers still want integrators to do what they do best: mix and match the most robust products to build a comprehensive security system that meets their specific needs. And while integration relies heavily on an integrator’s ingenuity, some of the burden falls to the manufacturer as well. Manufacturers must provide end-to-end solutions and open systems that give integrators flexibility based on customer needs. If vendors aren’t producing solutions that seamlessly integrate with others, then it might be time to consider other manufacturing options.

Industry standards, like ONVIF, go a long way toward ensuring that various products are interoperable. But keep in mind that open standards aren’t a cure-all for integrators that source technology from multiple vendors. Many providers today produce end-to-end solutions while focusing on just one part of the equation. Whatever their focus is —whether it’s video, video management solutions or storage — it should seamlessly synchronize and operate with any technology and be offered as part of an end-to-end solution. Now, isn’t that a win-win for everyone?

Applications and Integration Center expands flexibility to encompass gunshot detection with aerial-map presentation capabilities

Las Vegas – April 8, 2013 — DVTEL, the video surveillance solutions provider, announces integration of the Latitude network video management system (NVMS) with ShotSpotter gunfire alert and location technology. Integration with ShotSpotter provides seamless archiving and monitoring tools for events created by the gunfire alert and location technology. DVTEL has also enhanced its integration with Google Earth virtual globe, map and geographical information program.

Integration with third-party technologies is part of the DVTEL Applications and Integration Center’s ongoing mission to develop customized solutions for DVTEL customers. The ShotSpotter system involves covering wide areas with collaborative sensors that triangulate the precise location of a gunshot anywhere within a designated coverage area. The DVTEL-ShotSpotter integration module sends event notifications to Latitude to provide operators with a situational overview of any gunfire incidents. Appropriate actions can be programmed in response to each type of incoming gunshot detection event, and users can view and react to incoming gunshot events. ShotSpotter requires an installed and fully configured Google Earth integration.

The DVTEL-Google Earth integration module combines DVTEL’s Latitude NVMS with Google Earth’s location-based presentation capabilities. Google Earth maps the world by superimposing images obtained from satellite imagery, aerial photography and three-dimensional geographic information systems (GIS). Users can interact with Latitude-enabled cameras from the Google Earth map to live video by hovering over a camera and identify a camera easily with a Google pop-up balloon. When combining Google Earth with ShotSpotter, a gunshot’s location can be marked on a Google Earth map, and pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras in the vicinity can be automatically directed to the incident location and displayed to the operator in Latitude’s ControlCenter.

DVTEL’s Applications and Integration Center (AIC) provides custom automation, operation and third party integration to DVTEL’s Latitude Network Video Management System, allowing DVTEL solutions to be tailored to the customer’s requirement. The integrations with ShotSpotter and Google Earth are only the latest of dozens of customer integration options, including access control, audio, license plate recognition (LPR), point-of-sale (POS), physical security information management (PSIM), and video analytics systems.

“Gunfire detection systems are becoming more in demand, given high-profile shooting events such as the recent tragedy at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.,” said Jicko Chetrit, Director, DVTEL’s Applications and Integration Center. “As new technologies come on the scene, customers require custom integrations with Latitude NVMS, and our mission is to make it happen. Incorporating technologies such as ShotSpotter and Google Earth expand the capabilities of Latitude and provide more flexible and customized systems for DVTEL customers.”
